Go full circle at City Hall

Head over heels at Vienna City Hall? Discover the ups and downs of Vienna’s iconic government building for yourself – give it a try! The paternoster lift in this neo-Gothic building on Vienna’s Ringstrasse is one of the last in Austria to be preserved in its original condition. Like a loop of red tape, this continuous lift runs constantly through the City Hall, keeping up a speed of 0.2 meters per second.

It creaks and clatters. It takes courage just to climb aboard. It’s up to you where you get out. Maybe you’ll even dare to ride all the way around? At the risk you might go head over heels for the downward trip? Maybe you should zip up your pockets and hold onto your skirt, to be on the safe side. If you have time you could think how your hair is going to look, as the end draws near ...

Don’t panic!

One thing we can tell you: excitement builds as you approach the turning point on the top floor. When you re-emerge on the other side, will everything still be just as it was on the way up? – Even the mayor of Vienna can’t guarantee that. Have fun on your very own trip around the City Hall!
